Kanye West made an appearance on Thursday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he defended his support for President Donald Trump. “Just as a musician, African American, guy out in Hollywood, all these different things. Everyone around me tried to pick my candidate for me and then told me that every time I said, ‘I like Trump,’ that I couldn’t say it out loud,” he explained. “If I’m afraid to be me, then I’m not Ye, that’s what makes me Ye. I enjoy when people are mad at me about certain things.” Kanye also joked that Trump is a player after the host asked him if he was concerned about his wife Kim Kardashian’s meeting with the president in the Oval Office.

Meanwhile, the rapper remained silent when Kimmel asked him why he thinks Trump cares for black people, noting the musician’s 2005 comments about George Bush not caring about African Americans.

Later in his interview, Kanye discussed why he embraces being bipolar. “I think it’s good that when I had my first complete blackout at age five, my mom didn’t fully medicate me, because I might have never been Ye,” he notes. “And there’s time where at least I’m happy that I know.”
